Being active is not a choice

To think of exercise as a vocational activity is wrong. The human body was designed to work. Without it, not only will your body suffer, but your mind will too.

Make a change

Humans are habitual by nature. Change is hard and change is rarely wanted. But, more often than not, change is needed. As the world gets further into the epidemic of obesity, it's getting harder for those individuals to dig themselves out of the hole they have dug.

It’s never easy 100% of the time

This doesn’t mean you have to walk in and be happy as larry about every single workout. I was listening to a podcast (the Joe Rogan Experience #901 featuring Dr.Rhonda Patrick) and it hit a chord with me. I’ve been “active” for at least 90% of my life. My food choices and lifestyle choices weren’t always on point. But, I’ve always participated in some sort of sport, and gym-based fitness over the past 20 odd years. This doesn’t mean I walk into the gym every single time and find it easy. It’s a slog sometimes, and sometimes it’s a slog I don’t want to do, but I do it.

Get it in your head that it’s a good thing what you are starting

To start your fitness journey thinking that you are punishing yourself for all your wrong doings is negative from the get-go. You’ll associate the rest of your workouts with those feelings. You have to find a positive twist on some of those days where you’re finding it hard. Guaranteed at the end of every session you’ll feel better than when you started, even when that session wasn’t up to scratch.

Being. Active. Is. Not. Optional.

Like it or not, you’ll have to address your health at one stage in life, or your quality of life is going to go down drastically. It’s not just about the future, it’s also a lot about now. If you’re mentally unwell, physically unwell, or both, exercise is going to help, there’s very little doubt about that. Science has proven that time and time again. Don’t worry about the intricacies of which exercise is best. Get out there and do something that raises your heart rate. Your body, mind and future self will thank you in the long run.

This post isn’t about vanity. This is about living as much quality of life as possible up until you kick the bucket. Do you want to live until 80, with the last 20 years not being able to go upstairs? Or live until 80 being able to go upstairs and be able to enjoy yourself? If you answered the latter (which you bloody well should have) then you’re going to have to do some exercise and look after the only body you’ll ever be in. Ignore the Instagram “models”, don't worry about the goals of lifting so much weight you pop a blood vessel or two. Let's get out and get moving. For health’s sake.
